Despite a catastrophic collapse on Matchday 5 against Feyenoord, Manchester City are still the favorites at our best soccer betting sites by the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League odds.
Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for a Manchester City side that's lost five in a row, it did. The English giants suffered an incredible collapse on Tuesday, conceding three times after the 70th minute to draw after going up 3-0. It was the latest chapter in the disaster of a novel the club is writing this year.
Real Madrid and Liverpool battle on Wednesday, with the winner likely to overtake City as the new favorite once the week concludes. The latter are significant minus-money favorites by the Premier League championship odds.
Six teams entered Matchday 5 with odds shorter than +1000, with Arsenal and Bayern Munich shortening their odds with wins on Tuesday.

- City's odds only lengthened only to +350 with their loss to Sporting, but they're now +500 ahead of Matchday 5 as they've lost five straight matches overall
- Real Madrid's odds lengthened from +400 to +550 following their defeat to AC Milan
- Liverpool's price shortened from +750 to +600 after taking care of Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 at Anfield
- Borussia Dortmund are playing fairly inconsistent football this year, and they're in a group with Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa at +4000
- Sporting Lisbon (+5000) and Aletico Madrid (+5000) were the biggest movers of Matchday 4, but their odds are still very long
- Arsenal (+900) and Inter Milan's odds (+1800) moved only slightly following the latter's victory last Matchday

Sporting Lisbon ripped City apart in a frenzied and raucous Estadio Jose Alvalade, as the latter conceded two penalties. Even though City hasn't been at its best thus far this season, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who predicted this result.
When City does taste the sourness of defeat, they usually do so by the finest of margins. Not this time, as Sporting Lisbon ran roughshod over one of the juggernauts in world football.
While it hasn't severely impacted their Champions League odds, one needs to wonder whether City is fully equipped to recover and make another run at the crown jewel of European football.
This price moved from +370 to +500 without City even playing a Champions League match, showing how much their play domestically is beginning to impact their status across Europe.

Bayern Munich (+800)
If Bayern Munich's 4-1 loss in Spain to Barcelona concerned you, you're not alone. The visitors' atrocious display made me question their ability to contend with the European top dogs.
Vincent Kompany's squad didn't let the lopsided defeat in Spain impact their subsequent performances, as the Bavarian side have won the their last five matches by a combined 16-0. They followed that up with a 1-0 victory against PSG on Tuesday in this competition.
Their odds shortened slightly at a couple of our best sports betting sites, moving from +900 to +800. But I'm still in a bit of a holding pattern where Bayern is concerned, waiting for a slightly longer price or for their performance level to improve.

2024-25 UCL format changes
The group stage features a major change for the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League. We are now treated to a single 36-team league stage, during which each side faces eight different teams (four at home, four away).
The top eight overall advance directly to the Round of 16. Then, teams finishing from ninth to 24th will meet in the knockout-round playoffs, from which eight more teams will emerge. Once those 16 are set, it becomes a straight knockout like we've seen in previous years.
