Despite being on a 6-1-2 surge that has moved them within a point of the Pacific Division lead, the Calgary Flames opened as +125 underdogs for Monday night’s visit to the struggling Ottawa Senators. Puck drop from Canadian Tire Center is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (Prime Video/ESPN+).

Ottawa is coming off a 4-3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, the Sens’ fifth consecutive defeat and fifth in their last seven games. Meanwhile, Calgary edged the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in a shootout Saturday and has won four straight.

Our Flames vs. Senators prediction projects a low-scoring affair between these Canadian rivals and also likes one of Calgary’s key powerplay contributors to stay hot.

Although the Flames have managed to find the net a bit more in their last couple of games, the defense has been the biggest key to their 6-1-2 surge. Led by Calder Trophy odds contender goaltender Dustin Wolf, Calgary has given up just six goals in its last four games and 10 in its last six.

That ability to shut opponents down has helped the Flames consistently stay in games despite failing to score more than two regulation-time goals in seven of their last 10.

The Senators haven’t been quite as stingy lately, but a struggling offense is equally to blame for their current five-game skid. Before scoring twice in the dying minutes of Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Vancouver, Ottawa had managed just five goals in its previous 240 minutes of hockey — the equivalent of four games.

The Sens have also mustered just three even-strength goals over their last four outings.

With frustration mounting in Ottawa and the Flames struggling to generate offense on the road (10 regulation-time goals in their last seven, excluding empty netters), it’s hard to imagine either team lighting up the scoreboard tonight. At plus money, I’ll gladly back the Flames to go Under the total for the seventh time in their last nine away from home.

NHL picks made Monday; odds subject to change.

Yegor Sharangovich prop bet: Over 0.5 Power Play Points ⭐⭐

Best odds: +375 via Betway | Implied probability: 21.1%

Calgary’s powerplay is finally heating up again, converting four of its last eight opportunities after struggling through a 2-for-37 funk. Sharangovich has played a big role in the Flames’ recent success with the man advantage, potting powerplay markers in each of his last two games.

He was also a big contributor to Calgary’s powerplay last year, recording 17 of his 59 points when the Flames were up a skater.

Sharangovich and the Flames should enjoy multiple opportunities with the extra man against Ottawa, which has had trouble staying out of the box during its current skid. The Senators were shorthanded six times in Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Vancouver and have allowed four powerplay markers in their last four games.

Coming off a season-high seven-shot performance versus the Wild on Saturday, Sharangovich looks poised to do some damage tonight in the Canadian capital. Betway’s prices on his Over 0.5 Goals (+225) and Over 0.5 Points (-106) are also worth a look, but I’d rather ride Calgary’s recent powerplay success for a shot at a fatter price.
