The 4 Nations Face-Off coming up in February will see teams of NHL players representing Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland compete in a seven-game round-robin tournament capped off by a championship matchup at Boston’s TD Garden on Feb. 20.

And while Canada (presently the tournament favorite in the latest 4 Nations Face-Off odds) will feature myriad superstar players at both forward and defense with the likes of Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Cale Makar on its roster for the tournament, there will be plenty of question marks surrounding the team’s goaltending.

So who will be the three goalies selected for Canada’s roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off, and, more importantly, who will be the team’s starting goalie for its first game on February 12 against Sweden at the Bell Centre in Montreal? One of our top sports betting sites has weighed in on the question.

Binnington favored as Canada’s starting goalie

The St. Louis Blues’ Jordan Binnington is the current favorite at FanDuel Canada to be Canada’s starting goalie for the 4 Nations Face-Off at -102 odds. Binnington has championship pedigree, having backstopped the Blues to a Stanley Cup back in 2019, and the 31-year-old has been the team’s starting goalie ever since with 150 wins in his NHL career to date.

However, Binnington has never truly been considered an elite NHL goaltender, and his stats since his Cup-winning campaign haven’t really stood out. Canadian hockey fans have been used to seeing the likes of Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur between the pipes at these sorts of international events, and Binnington comes up short in those comparisons.

Hill, Skinner, Thompson, Montembeault next

Unfortunately for Canada, though, there are no equivalents to Roy or Brodeur amongst its current crop of NHL goaltenders. Following Binnington, then, in the odds to be Canada’s starting goalie for the 4 Nations Face-Off are the Vegas Golden Knights’ Adin Hill at +186, the Edmonton Oilers’ Stuart Skinner at +340, the Washington Capitals’ Logan Thompson at +1300, and the Montreal Canadiens’ Sam Montembeault at +2500.

Like Binnington, Hill also has Stanley Cup pedigree as he led the Golden Knights to the championship with a strong playoff run in 2023. However, the 28-year-old has never won 20 games in a single season, and his overall numbers have gone down the last two years. Skinner was in net for the Oilers in the postseason last year as they reached the Stanley Cup final, but he’s also underwhelmed this season.

Thompson, meanwhile, in his first year with the Capitals, wouldn’t have been on Canada’s radar prior to this season but has looked strong in recent weeks. Montembeault was a trendy pick by many puck prognosticators to make the Canadian team for the 4 Nations Face-Off early in the season but has lost some of that momentum in the midst of a challenging Canadiens campaign.

Rounding out the Canadian keeper contenders

Beyond those first five on the odds to be Canada’s starting goalie for the 4 Nations Face-Off are some lesser-known keepers (Connor Ingram at +3500, Devon Levi at +10000, Mackenzie Blackwood at +10000) and some veteran options (Tristan Jarry at +3500, Cam Talbot at +4000, Darcy Kuemper at +10000, Jake Allen at +10000, Marc-Andre Fleury at +10000).

Kuemper backstopped the Colorado Avalanche to a Stanley Cup in 2022 but disappointed the last two seasons with the Capitals and is currently injured for the Los Angeles Kings. The journeyman Talbot has solid numbers for the Detroit Red Wings this season but seems like a stretch to be Canada’s starting goaltender at this stage, while the 39-year-old Fleury has played sparingly for the Minnesota Wild this season and would likely only make the Canadian roster as the third-string netminder.

Ride with Thompson for the bigger odds payout

With no clear standouts amongst the Canadian options in net for the 4 Nations Face-Off we should examine instead the offered payouts. Binnington and Hill seem like they’ll claim two of the three goalie roster spots for Canada, but neither boast lucrative odds on this prop. And with the roster deadline looming on Dec. 2, the Canadian brass doesn’t have much viewing time left to make a decision.

That seemingly would give the edge to Thompson over the likes of Skinner or Montembeault, as he’s been more impressive over the first quarter of the NHL season. And being on the roster means giving Thompson a shot at starting Canada’s opener on Feb. 12, and giving us a shot at a healthy payout.

My Pick: Logan Thompson (+1300)
