Big Ten meets Big East in the second round of the College Basketball Crown tonight when the Nebraska Cornhuskers square off against the Georgetown Hoyas for a spot in Saturday’s semifinals. Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m. ET (FS1) from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Perhaps no CBC team was hit harder by the transfer portal and opt-outs than Georgetown, which was without Drew Fielder, Jayden Epps, Micah Peavy, and Thomas Sorber on Tuesday. That meant the Hoyas were without three of their four players who averaged double figures, and were also apparently dealing with a team-wide illness entering their first game.

Malik Mack was Georgetown’s lone holdover who averaged double figures, and he turned in a Herculean performance with 37 points on 13-of-24 shooting. However, he had only scored in double figures once in the prior five games, so I am not banking on a repeat performance.

Nebraska brought the more intact team to Las Vegas, and with the Cornhuskers also being healthier entering this game, I am comfortable laying the points.

Nebraska is a tough opponent to prepare for, as its offense runs opposing defenses through a plethora of dribble hand-offs and off-ball screens. The Cornhuskers also held Arizona State to 1.01 points per possession, but the Sun Devils’ portal-raided roster aided that.

Ed Cooley had his Hoyas playing fast despite being without so many important players. I will continue to ride the Over trend (six of the eight teams Tuesday scored over 80 points) more often than not in this tournament until teams prove they can play defense consistently.

Nebraska not only scored 86 points in its opening-round win but also allowed Arizona State to attempt 26 free throws. That is why I am expecting Georgetown to keep up with its scoring and am predicting a final score of Nebraska 85, Georgetown 76.
