The defending in-season tournament champions begin their title defense on Friday.

The Los Angeles Lakers, who won the inaugural IST (rebranded as the NBA Cup this year), travel to face the San Antonio Spurs inside Frost Bank Center for a 7:30 p.m. ET tip (ESPN). The Lakers are 3.5-point road favorites and enter the matchup on a three-game win streak.

But the Spurs also have momentum following Victor Wembanyama's 50-point performance on Wednesday. Can the sophomore replicate that showing against LeBron James and Anthony Davis?

There was much to like about Wembanyama’s output against the Wizards, scoring 50 points on 29 shots in 32 minutes. However, his one turnover was arguably the most impressive, considering he’s averaged 3.4 turnovers per game this year.

Wembanyama has committed four or more turnovers in half of his games this season but has only committed four total turnovers in his previous two contests. I expect that streak to continue against a Lakers team that ranks 21st in opponent turnovers per contest.

I’d bet this prop at -138 or better ahead of Friday’s tipoff.

Anthony Davis Over 2.5 assists ⭐⭐⭐⭐

First-year head coach JJ Redick has made Davis the hub of the Lakers’ offense. Davis has a usage rating of 31.5, up from last year’s mark of 26.7. That has led to a scoring average of 30.2 points per game.

Despite the usage increase, Davis averages 0.7 fewer assists per game this season. That could easily change on Friday, as Wembanyama’s length forces opposing big men to think twice about challenging him at the rim.

FanDuel is the lone shop offering a +100 price on Davis to record three-plus assists, as the rest of our best prop betting sites charge minus odds for the same ticket. I’m happy to take advantage of that discount, especially since Davis has cleared this mark in back-to-back games

LeBron James to record a triple-double ⭐⭐⭐

James, 39, became the oldest player in the NBA to record three consecutive triple-doubles during Wednesday’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies. He bested the previous record set by 34-year-old LeBron.

Can James continue to turn back the clock in the NBA Cup opener? I can’t answer that, but I know these odds aren’t correct.

James’ assist prop has jumped from 8.5 to 10.5 since the last game, reflecting how his role has changed since D’Angelo Russell was removed from the starting lineup. He has averaged 20.3 potential assists over the previous three games after averaging 14.3 before Russell moved to the second unit.

The betting market tells you that James has a solid chance of recording double-digit assists. I’ll take the +260 odds that he collects double-digit rebounds, especially since his rebound prop is 8.5.
