While players like Smith and Love are getting a ton of attention heading into this matchup, defense has been the key to the runs from the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish.
These are two of the country's three best defenses. Ohio State is No. 2 in EPA per dropback and No. 3 in EPA per rush on defense, while Notre Dame is No. 1 in EPA per dropback and No. 5 in EPA per rush.
To make things even tougher when it comes to scoring, both teams are dealing with offensive line injuries. That's part of the reason I believe the Under will hit, with the Buckeyes taking it 24-20.
Over 1.5 field goals made (-225) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Given how dominant both of these defenses have been this season, ranking No. 1 and No. 5 by SP+, getting into the end zone won't be easy.
The Irish's defense has been impressive on key downs this year (No. 4 in 3rd/4th down success), and the Buckeyes often put offenses into tough spots with their defense sitting No. 1 in early downs EPA. That could mean settling for field goals on promising drives.
It helps that neither team has been amazing in the red zone this season either, which we broke down in our Ohio State vs. Notre Dame comparison. Kickers Mitch Jeter and Jayden Fielding have combined to go 7-for-7 on field goals in their last two CFP games.
Jeremiah Smith Over 80.5 receiving yards (-115) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Smith is poised to bounce back after a quiet performance in the Cotton Bowl win over Texas. He's my pick to take home MVP honors in our Ohio State vs. Notre Dame expert picks.
While the Longhorns kept him quiet while bracketing Smith and rolling coverage his way, Notre Dame apparently plans to stick to playing man coverage against Ohio State. That means Smith could benefit from plenty of one one-on-ones with just a single-high safety over top.
If that's how the Irish plan to play him, Smith should put up numbers similar to what he did in the first two CFP games. That's when he combined for 290 receiving yards and four scores on 13 catches.
Riley Leonard Under 177.5 passing yards (-115) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Notre Dame doesn't even want to throw the ball with Leonard. The Irish would rather stick to their ground attack and run an offense that looks like it would have thrived in the Knute Rockne era.
Leonard has been sporadic all season, especially after his shoulder was banged up earlier in the year. He's averaging 173.7 passing yards per game and has gone Under 177.5 in eight contests this season.
The Buckeyes also give up the fewest passing yards per contest in the country (161.1). They boast a fierce defensive line too that will be harassing Leonard all game long and impacting his ability to make plays through the air.
TreVeyon Henderson anytime touchdown scorer (-105) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
After splitting carries all season with Quinshon Judkins, Henderson is clearly benefitting from fresh legs despite being more than four months into the season. That timeshare backfield has been paying off for him in the CFP.
Henderson has scored in all three playoff games and leads Ohio State with five postseason touchdowns. His big-play ability has been on full display, as he's averaging 121.6 yards from scrimmage on 10.6 touches per game in the playoff.
The tailback can make plays as a runner or receiver, even against a stout Notre Dame defense, and his explosiveness has been so impressive. He's logged five runs for 15-plus yards during the postseason to go with 169 rushing yards after contact, according to PFF.

Both Henderson and Smith have been key to Ohio State hammering opponents in the CFP, with the pair leading the Buckeyes in yards from scrimmage. Henderson has already topped 83.5 rushing and receiving yards in all three games, and Smith is positioned to get back on track against the Irish after posting 100-plus against both Tennessee and Oregon.
Meanwhile, Emeka Egbuka has been steady out of the slot throughout the CFP as Howard's safety net. He's caught exactly five passes in all three CFP games, and our Ohio State vs. Notre Dame preview digs into why he could be the X-factor in Atlanta.

If Notre Dame is going to pull off the upset, it'll be because of its run game and ferocious defense. Love is one of the best backs in the country, and he's reportedly far healthier for the CFP National Championship than he was for the Orange Bowl.
He's already found the end zone 19 times this season. So if any Notre Dame player is going to score on the Buckeyes, it'll be the guy who's forced 62 missed tackles this season. And the Irish should be able to pressure Howard into at least one mistake. This team leads the country in forced turnovers (32) thanks to star safety Xavier Watts.
