Virginia Casinos Collect $72.3 Million in January 2025

There's a healthy sports betting market for our best sports betting sites operating in Virginia, but that's not the only gambling scene in Old Dominion.
The Virginia Lottery announced the revenue figures for its three land-based casinos in January, revealing these locations collected $72.3 million in adjusted gaming revenue (AGR). That’s an increase of over 36% compared with the year prior, when casinos brought in just $52.8 million.
However, the $72.3 million slightly declined from the $74.9 million generated in December. Still, the AGR total far surpassed other months last year, such as June and October, when casino revenue failed to top $60 million.
The breakdown
Caesars Virginia contributed the most to the January 2025 revenue figures, adding $28.5 million in AGR, which was 39.4% of the state-wide total.
Caesars has the second-largest slot count of any casino in Old Dominion, with its 1479 machines producing an AGR of $21.3 million, up over 73% from the year before.
The casino also supports the most significant collection of table games, with 137 options. Those games added an AGR of $7.1 million, an increase of 65.7% year-on-year.
Rivers Casino Portsmouth generated the next-most revenues, $25.2 million in January 2025, up 7.2% from January 2024.
While the casino only has 85 table games, it produced the highest table game AGR in Virginia in January 2025, collecting $8 million. Maybe that’s not surprising, as table game AGR only increased 1.5% year-on-year. Meanwhile, slot revenue climbed by 10.1% to $17.2 million.
While Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol has the most slot machines of any Virginia casino, 1,486, it brought in the least slot AGR, $15.1 million.
However, this was still a climb of 52.9% from January 2024. The casino also increased table game revenues by 54.9% to $3.3 million, bringing the casino’s overall revenues to $18.5 million.
Virginia casino taxes
The Virginia Lottery collected over $13 million in taxes from the $72.3 million casino AGR. The organization splits these funds between three sources before giving any remaining amount to the Gaming Proceeds Funds. The Lottery provides 6% of the taxes to the casino host cities, amounting to $4.3 million in January 2025.
Meanwhile, the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund collected 0.8% of the total tax, just over $100,000. The Family and Children’s Trust Fund received 0.2% of the tax, over $26,000. The remaining $8.5 million went to the Gaming Proceeds Fund.
